The first half of 2025 brought important developments for the TOLERATE project, reaffirming the consortium’s strong commitment to delivering results in line with the established work plan and objectives.
Key Developments from the Past Months
Change in Coordination
A key milestone this year was the transition in project coordination, officially effective from 11 April 2025, from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
This handover was carefully managed, ensuring a smooth and seamless continuation of activities across all Work Packages. The consortium unanimously welcomed Pablo Ivan Nikel as the new Project Coordinator, along with DTU’s project management team, who have joined the initiative with fresh energy and vision.
Further details on the transition were shared in the project’s most recent press release.
New Visual Identity and Communication Materials
In line with the change in coordination—and to better reflect TOLERATE’s core values of scientific innovation, climate resilience, sustainability, and the bioeconomy—the project has updated its visual identity.
This refreshed image aims to strengthen the project’s visibility and positioning within the Horizon Europe ecosystem and better engage with target audiences to maximise impact among stakeholders.
Led by CTA, the leader of Work Package 7 on communication, dissemination, and exploitation, the project has developed a new brand manual, along with new communication materials, including the first project video and a project Brochure, now available on the project website.
The next step in this communication strategy will be a website update, aligning content and design with the new visual identity.
General Assembly: The Consortium Meets at DTU
In early June, the consortium gathered for a two-day General Assembly hosted at DTU-Technical University of Denmark-.
The meeting opened with a warm welcome from the new Project Coordinator, who formally introduced the coordination change and assured partners of continuity in the project’s strategic direction.
Work Package leaders presented progress updates, highlighting encouraging results that are bringing the project closer to its first bioproduct prototypes. Highlights from the work to date include:
- Authentication of ancient DNA (aDNA)
- Testing of paleoenzymes in Pseudomonas putida
- Bioaugmentation experiments
- Evaluation of microbiome dynamics
- Legal framework development and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The atmosphere was one of constructive collaboration and shared enthusiasm, with productive discussions reinforcing synergies between different Work Packages.
First Review Meeting
On 30 June, the consortium held its first Review Meeting, covering Reporting Period 1 (Months 1–18).
The session was attended by Project Officer Blanca Saez Lacave and Project Monitor Conor Meade, along with 28 participants from across the consortium, including WP leaders and partner representatives.
Each Work Package presented progress made, showcasing early results and key achievements to date.
Both the PO and PM positively acknowledged the project’s performance, highlighting the quality of results, innovation, and scientific novelty. They also provided valuable recommendations to guide future steps and increase the project’s long-term impact.
This review marked a key moment for the TOLERATE consortium, offering an opportunity to reflect on progress and refine its strategic direction for the years ahead.
Looking Ahead: Reaching the Midpoint
TOLERATE will celebrate its second anniversary in December 2025, marking the halfway point of the project’s four-year journey.
With the overarching goal of harnessing ancient rhizosphere biodiversity to develop bio-based innovations, the project aims to improve climate resilience in both agriculture and industry—contributing directly to the objectives of the European Green Deal and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
To coincide with this milestone, the next General Assembly will bring together representatives from across the consortium to share updates, assess progress across Work Packages, and define strategic priorities as the project enters its third year.
