TOLERATE Summer School Technical Workshop 2026: Innovating biotechnology for a sustainable future

The TOLERATE Summer School Technical Workshop, held on 6–7 May 2026 in Alexandroupolis, Greece, brought together MSc students, PhD candidates, early-career researchers, and industry professionals for two days of scientific exchange and hands-on learning. Organized by the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace within the framework of the TOLERATE project, the event focused on advancing knowledge and collaboration in microbial biotechnology, environmental genomics, and sustainable bio-based innovation.

The scientific program highlighted emerging developments in biotechnology and sustainability, covering topics such as synthetic biology, microbial cell factory design, ancient DNA genomics, molecular dynamics, biomolecular NMR, and environmental sustainability assessment. Special attention was given to innovative approaches that support climate change adaptation and the development of sustainable agri-food systems. Through expert lectures and interdisciplinary discussions, participants gained insight into how cutting-edge research can contribute to resilient and environmentally responsible solutions.

An important part of the Summer School was its practical and interactive training component. Participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on laboratory modules focused on ancient DNA analysis, soil microbial identification using genetic toolkits, microbiome and rhizobiome community analysis, flow cytometry applications, and molecular visualization techniques. These activities allowed attendees to strengthen both their technical expertise and their understanding of modern methodologies currently shaping biotechnology and environmental research.

The event also encouraged dialogue between academia and industry through an Industry Roundtable involving TOLERATE industrial partners. Discussions explored innovation pathways, biotechnology applications, and career opportunities within the sector, creating valuable networking opportunities for young scientists and professionals. By combining scientific excellence, practical experience, and collaborative exchange, the TOLERATE Summer School successfully fostered an inspiring environment dedicated to innovation, sustainability, and the future of biotechnology.
